The new Golf R is faster than the previous model, but it is also heavier.
Both and Golf R models have turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engines. They are paired with seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearboxes with launch control. However, the Mk8 produces more power. The Mk7.5 produces 300 horsepower (223 kW) & 400 Nm (295lb-lt), while the Mk7.5 produces 320 horsepower (309 pound-feet). Both models have all-wheel drives, but the Mk8 has a more sophisticated system to deliver the power to the ground.
The Mk8 is slightly heavier than the Mk7.5, weighing 1,551 kg (3,419 lb) and 1483 kg (3.269 lb), respectively. The Mk7.5’s performance disadvantages are not overcome by the weight difference. The Mk8 wins all four drag races which include two rolling starts. The Mk8 passed the Mk7.5 even though the Mk8 gave it a half second delay. The Mk8 covered the quarter-mile in 12.3 seconds or 12.8 with the delay of a half second, while the Mk7.5 took 13.1 seconds.
In one area, the Mk7.5 is better than the Mk8 – braking. The Mk7.5’s lighter weight and larger tires gave it an advantage in this competition, but the Mk8 is still the superior performance machine, even though it doesn’t look much different. Even small adjustments to the powertrain can make a big difference in real-world situations. This video should encourage those who are still unsure about whether or not to get the Mk8 in the driving seat of their new VW. It’s even better.
