The titanium exhaust system is significantly lighter than the standard one.
VW introduced the optional Performance Pack to the Golf R facelift earlier in the year at the Geneva Motor Show. Now it is ready to talk about it. The titanium exhaust system, which Akrapovic developed, weighs 7 kg (15.4 pounds) less and gives the all-wheel drive performance hatchback a more pleasant sound. You can alter the driving mode to change the exhaust note. It sounds best when you are revving the engine or shifting through the gears.
The performance pack includes an upgraded brake system, which weighs 2kg (4.4 lbs) less that the Golf R’s standard setup. It features an aluminum brake pot and a cast-steel friction ring with cast pins. It is lighter than the standard set and expands radially upon heating. This allows for precise metering. The front axle’s brake pads are specially designed to offer superior stopping power. Visually, the optional brakes are distinguished by the silver logo plate with “R” lettering at the calipers.
VW mentions R customers have the option of ordering semi-slick tires for faster lap times on track days. Wolfsburg also offers aerodynamic modifications, including reshaped side skirts and air curtains in front. A roof-mounted spoiler increases downforce by 20 kg (44 pounds).
These performance upgrades are not accompanied with a power boost, as the European Golf R wagon and hatchback still have 310 hp (228 kW), coming from the familiar 2.0-liter TSI motor. VW tried to do an R400/R420 but it was scrapped.
