Last year saw a decrease in sales of both passenger and commercial Volkswagen cars.
The ongoing chip crisis seems to be mostly affecting mainstream brands. Luxury automakers such as Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce and other performance manufacturers like Lamborghini are reporting record sales in 2021. However, Volkswagen Group saw a 4.5 percent decrease in global passenger and commercial vehicle sales.
VAG’s 2021 sales report shows that 8,882,000 vehicles were sold last year, compared to 9,305,000 in 2020. Nearly nine million vehicles were sold, with 4,896,900 being Volkswagen passenger cars and 359,000.500 being commercial vehicles. Both the LCV and passenger arm saw declines of 8.1 percent and 3.2%, respectively, in comparison to 2020.
Two other core brands of Volkswagen Group also failed to have a successful year. Audi suffered a slight 0.7 percent drop in sales with 1,680kilo deliveries. This left the German brand third behind premium competitors like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Skoda’s global sales fell 12.6 percent to 878,000.200 in 2021.
SEAT, on the other hand, had a strong performance with 470,000. This is an increase of 426.600 in the previous year. Porsche set an all-time record by delivering more than 300,000. The Macan was the most popular product in the brand’s lineup with 88.362 worldwide deliveries. Porsche’s 10.9 percent increase in sales is the largest among all core brands of Volkswagen Group.
MAN and Scania had a particularly good year in the commercial division. They increased their sales by 25.7 percent and 27.8 percent respectively, respectively, from 2020. The VAG’s supercar and exotic division, which includes Lamborghini and Bentley, performed well by 23.6 percent, with 23,100 deliveries.
