Convertible tops are not helpful for the Mustang
The Ford Mustang has been a legendary performance vehicle. However, not all pony breeds are equal. Ford also offers an EcoBoost 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood of the GT. The GT has more horsepower than the six-cylinder, but it is also more affordable than ever. A new Sam CarLegion video demonstrates how this has changed. In a series drag races, the channel pits Mustang against VW Jetta GLI.
On paper, the Mustang is more impressive than the Jetta. The EcoBoost four-cylinder engine produces 330 horsepower (474 kilowatts) and 350 pound feet (474 Newton-meterss) of torque. It’s also equipped with the HPP. The Jetta has a 2.0-liter engine that produces just 228 horsepower (170 kW) as well as 258 lb.ft (349 Nm). Ford sends the Mustang’s power through a 10-speed auto while VW drives the front wheels via a 7-speed DCT.
The channel runs the pair through a series drag and rolling races. However, the results are consistent each time: the Mustang is swept by the Jetta regardless of vehicle settings. The Jetta wins the first race in its Sport setting. The second race will be in Sport mode, but with traction disabled. Although the Jetta has trouble getting a good launch, it is able to surpass the Mustang just before the finish.
Rolling races are no different. The Jetta continues to win. The Mustang’s handicap is its size. The convertible is significantly heavier than the EcoBoost standard, making them more equal. Although the Jetta has less horsepower and torque than the Mustang, it still beats Mustangs, which is quite impressive.
