VW Passat BlueMotion sets a world record for single-tank range

Journalist drives Passat BlueMotion 1.6 liter TDI 1,531mi/2464km on a single tank. This is equivalent to driving from London in England to Malaga in Spain with one fuel-up.

Gavin Conway, Sunday Times journalist, set a new world record driving a Volkswagen Passat 1,531 m (2464 km), on one tank of fuel.

The Passat was equipped with the most efficient diesel engine VW has ever produced – the 1.6 liter TDI (105 PS / 250 Nm) with BlueMotion technology, which includes a stop/start feature for better fuel economy. The car was unchanged. It was a standard production car.

Conway used 77.25 liters diesel fuel for the drive. This resulted in a fuel-economy of just 90 miles per gallon (imperial), or 3.1 Liter/100km – far higher than the standard combined cycle rating (64.2 mpg, 4.4 liter/100km).

Representatives from Guinness Book of World Records confirmed the record.

BlueMotion technology is available on the Passat. It includes a lower ride height and low roll resistance tires. Aerodynamic bodywork, stop/start systems, and programmed battery chargers. BlueMotion technology can also be found on the Polo or Golf models.
