This wagon has everything you would expect from a mid-size wagon and more.
Volkswagen calls Passat “the most important family car” in the world, and it still holds a special place in their lineup, even as crossovers take over. The MQB-based European version received a facelift at the start of the month and is now ready for its first special edition. The R-Line Edition is available as a wagon only and in a limited number of examples. It consists of what happens when you check many boxes on the list.
The Passat Variant comes standard with a 4Motion all-wheel drive. However, it can only be ordered with the 272-horsepower 2.0 TSI gasoline engine or the 240-hp 2.0 Bi -TDI twin-turbodiesel. For a striking contrast effect, the giant wagon is finished in a new shiny shade, Moonstone Grey. It also features a series of black accents. The most prominent being the large glossy black roof.
Meanwhile, the 19-inch alloys are available in a high gloss black color. The black side mirror caps, side window frames, roof-mounted rear spoiler, and diffuser add to the black theme. The black-tinted LED taillights complete the look at the rear. The lights at the front, as mentioned above, are the matrix LED version launched with the Passat.
You’ll notice a predominantly black theme once you get inside the cabin. This includes the R-Line seats that are made from a mix of Nappa and what Volkswagen calls “carbon” leather. The stainless steel side sills have the R-line logo, and the pedals are finished in brushed stainless.

The Passat Variant R-Line Edition, as we have mentioned, has everything: digital instrument clusters, larger 9.2-inch infotainment screens, Area View camera system, and VW’s most up-to-date adaptive damper controller. Wolfsburg also includes its Travel Assist which allows the wagon partially assisted driving. It automatically steers, accelerates, and brakes the car while it travels up to 130 mph (210 km/h).
VW will be exhibiting the Passat Variant R Line Edition at the 89 Geneva Motor Show next week. There we’ll also see the T-Roc R performance crossover in a concept form.
