VW Phideon GTE is the Large Hybrid Sedan That Only China Can Get

You can travel 50 km (31 miles) on only electric power

The Phaeton is no more available. However, Volkswagen is now selling the best of the Phideon in China, where it has been for several months. The full-size luxury sedan, originally introduced last year at the Geneva Motor Show is now attending Auto Shanghai to showcase its green credentials. The Phideon GTE is expected to be the most powerful GTE-badged vehicle ever. It uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain that was borrowed from the Audi A6 E-Tron, a car made exclusively for China, and it will soon surpass the previous record.

To cater to the Chinese market, VW’s ecofriendly sedan will be made in China just like the Audi. The 2.0-liter TFSI gasoline engine will be paired with an electric motor to produce a total output of 245 horsepower (180kilowatts) as well as 369 pound-feet (599 Newton-meters). The Passat GTE in Europe uses a smaller 1.4TSI gasoline engine, which, when combined with the electric motor, delivers 218 horsepower (160 kW) as well as 243 lbft (400Nm).

The 14.1-kWh lithium battery in the Phideon GTE will be enough to power a Passat GTE-matching electric range measuring 31 miles (50 km). Add the gasoline tank to the equation and the electrified big sedan can cover distances up to 528 miles (850km).

The VW Phideon also comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter engine rated at 300 horsepower (220 kW), and 347lb-ft (405 Nm) respectively. It can also be equipped with a 4Motion or a 2.0-liter, which is the entry-level model with front-wheel drive.

The People’s Republic currently displays a plug-in hybrid car with GTE-specific LED daytime run lights. It also has some subtle styling changes to stand out from other conventionally-powered cars. It is a luxurious Passat with extra legroom in the rear and a longer wheelbase.

We’ll need to wait for a global full-size, posh sedan from Wolfsburg in order to get the Phaeton back . It is likely that it will be an EV.
