VW Transporter T6.1 Gets a New Look and Lots More Tech

This year, VW’s beloved van is getting a major upgrade.

The Volkswagen Transporter6.1 showcases its new look again. The company has shown it this time as the utilitarian panel van instead of the people hauling Multivan in the previous photos. The pickup body can be ordered in single or double-cab configurations.

The Transporter 6.1 is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel. It comes in a range of tunes including 89 horsepower (66 kilowatts), 109 hp (81.1 kW), 148 hp (1110 kW), 196 hp (246 kW), and 196 hp (346 kW). All-wheel drive is an option for the 148- and196-hp versions. A fully electric version is also available with 110 hp (82 kW), and up to 77.6 kilowatthours of battery capacity. This allows for a range of 249 miles (400 km) in the NEDC cycle.

The latest news about the VW Transporter:

The new Transporter makes the switch from hydraulically-assisted system to electro-mechanical power steering. This switch gives you more driver assistance tech, such as lane keep assist or park assist. The van also has helpful features such as side monitoring, rear traffic alerts, trailer assist and road sign display.

Commercial customers need a van such as the Transporter. The updated infotainment system and 230-volt outlet near the driver seat should be of benefit to drivers. There is also a lockable compartment underneath the passenger seat. A new standard feature is the possibility to lock both the cargo compartment as well as the cab separately.

In Europe, the first variants of Transporter 6.1 will be available starting in October. A variety of body styles will be offered depending on whether buyers are looking for a basic panel van or a vehicle that can be used as a recreational vehicle, such as a campervan.
