Wasted Wagons: VW Alltrack, SportWagen Dead And Gone After 2019

Both models will be discontinued by December.

Volkswagen of America today announced that the two variants of the Golf hatchback’s wagon versions – the Alltrack & SportWagen – will be discontinued at the end of this year. Both Golf variant sales have declined amid the SUV/crossover craze. Volkswagen recognizes this and reminds customers that the upcoming crossover/electric ID models will effectively fill the gap in the lineup.

This news comes a few months after first reported the departure of the base model Volkswagen Golf from the U.S. market, and that only the GTI or Golf R would be back for another generation. Although VW stated that all models were being considered for North American markets, today’s news confirms that only the GTI and Golf R will be returning.

The GTI and Golf R accounted for 48 percent of total Golf family sales in 2018, with the GTI surpassing the base Golf almost three to one. The entire Golf family sold 42,271 units that year, which includes the Alltrack and Sportwagen. This compares to the Tiguan crossover which sold more than six figures.Wasted Wagons: VW Alltrack, SportWagen Dead And Gone After 2019

Alltrack and the SportWagen join the Beetle , which was also discontinued at VW’s Puebla Mexico plant. This creates new production space for the Tarek crossover, expected to begin production in 2020. The ID 3 hatchback will not be coming to the U.S. although Volkswagen has promised to bring an electric compact crossover that is similar to the I.D. Crozz concept, in 2020.

We are excited about the new model editions for VW, but we also feel a bit sad that the Golf family is shrinking in size. We are fortunate to have the eighth generation GTI/Golf R, which is going to be a very special year.
