Watch A Ford GT Hit 213 MPH on The Space Shuttle’s Massive Runway

In 14 seconds, the bone stock supercar can reach 150 mph.

The Johnny Bohmer PROving Grounds top speed runs have been a great experience. This company uses the runway that was once used by the Space Shuttle in Merritt Island, Florida. At 3.2 miles long, the runway is the longest in the U.S. and top speed runs use 2.7 miles to achieve full acceleration. This leaves only a half-mile to shut down. And, even though it seems like a lot, if you try to pull up at 200 mph, this distance can disappear fast.

The 2017 Ford GT makes it go even faster. Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds posted the above top speed run. Although saw a Ford GT at this exact location back February, the speeds this time are slightly higher. Ford claims the GT will reach a top speed of 216 mph. In February, a stock GT managed 210 mph but was still climbing steadily at the end.

Another bone stock GT is the result of this latest effort. It produces 647 horsepower (482 megawatts) from its midmounted twin-turbo V6. Although we don’t know the exact atmospheric conditions for the February run, it was light with temperatures in 70 degrees and humidity between 60-60 percent. Running at the Space Shuttle landing pad is a great experience, aside from the fact that there’s a Space Shuttle on display at it. The altitude at which maximum air density can be achieved is just above sea level. This means that conditions were perfect for the top-speed run.

The white Ford GT is also more aggressive than the previous model, reaching 100 mph in 7 seconds and 150 in 14 seconds. The acceleration slows down after 180 mph, but it continues to climb steadily past 200. We don’t know if the GT was given more time to run due to the better atmospheric conditions or because it had to accelerate harder. However, we know that the GT easily reached 213 mph just before the shutdown zone.

It is just 3 mph short of its official top speed. If it has a little more space to run, it may be able reach that speed.
