Watch Bugatti Chiron easily reach 261 MPH in a new video series

Andy Wallace, Bugatti racer and test driver, took a leisurely ride.

Already four years old, the Bugatti Chiron has been in production for four years. Although we seem to be raving about the hypercar’s incredible 261-mph (420 km/h top speed) just yesterday, its debut at the Geneva Motor Show was in March 2016. We’ve seen many videos of the hypercar in action since then, but very few clips have actually shown the car at its highest speed.

Although street-legal cars are rare in the world, Bugatti has a YouTube series that shows just how fast this car is. The video below shows a top speed run.

This is the fifth episode of a series called Andy Wallace. How to… Chiron. As you can guess, Andy Wallace, legendary race car driver, and Bugatti test driver, hosts the series. Today’s episode contains five episodes. The first is an introduction to the car, followed by a look inside, the drive modes and launch control. These subjects were covered extensively over the Chiron’s four-year life span. We’re skipping episode five, which is all about the speed key.

The Chiron, just like the Veyron before it, requires a special key in order to enter top speed mode. Wallace is narrating the process the Chiron must go through before the driver can set off. The interior shots are complemented by flyby camera angles as the Chiron accelerates to 261 MPH in an utterly effortless manner.

Although the sprint does not take place in real time, we know that the car can reach 249 MPH in 32 seconds. The extra 12 mph is not difficult to achieve; we don’t know the exact time, but we can see the speedometer climb as it hits the speed limiter. This tells us everything we need about the W16 quad-turbocharged engine behind the driver.

The Chiron can reach 300 mph with the speed limiter removed, and some aero tweaks at its back. This is the prototype version of the Chiron Longtail. It was able to hit 304 mph (480 km/h) last summer. However, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ production version, dubbed the Chiron Super Sport 300+ , will be electronically limited only 273mph (440 km/h).
