The old coupe still loves running.
This is something different. While we are used to seeing videos showing supercars driving the most sections of Germany’s autobahn, this car is not a supercar. It doesn’t have to be a supercar, but modest speeds can still be thrilling when a car is as beautiful as this Mercedes-Benz C123 coupe. This is exactly what you see in the TopSpeedGermany video. This car is a 1984-280 CE and looks amazing in silver, presumably with the same bone stock it had 36 years ago. According to the video description, the inline-six under the car’s long hood generates 185 horsepower (136kilowatts). The inline-six is connected to a 4-speed automatic, so there won’t be any gear rowing. You can still enjoy the Benz’s roaring down the highway if you turn up your sound. What is the speed of an old Merc? Remember that horsepower only began to return to automobiles around the mid-1980s. Emissions compliance was not an issue only for US cars of that era. However, 185 horsepower from a small six-cylinder was not bad for the time. It appears to be in excellent condition with almost 184,000 km (114,332 mile) on the odometer.
It propels the Mercedes-Benz at full throttle to approximately 209 km/h (135 mph). Yes, this seems to be the drag-limited maximum speed. We use approximately as it is a 36-year old machine. It has a traditional speedometer gauge and we really miss seeing the speed needles climb. Although the sprint is completed in just 20 seconds, it takes a while to go from 100 km/h (62.5 mph) and 200 km/h (122.4 mph). It’s about the journey and not the destination with a classic like this.
