So. Much. Detail.
We have already seen many beautiful automotive creationsfrom woodworking art, and it is likely that there will be more. This Land Rover Defender features a fully functional engine bay, detailed interior, and working suspension.
The project begins with rough slabs. Surprise! Instead of creating two sides connected by a roof the Defender body is traced and made from one piece of wood. This is an automotive unibody design. We’ll discuss other aspects of the build later.
Each Woodworking Art project that we have seen so far has required extensive use of a saw, but this video may show the most detailed chisel work. It’s amazing how detailed the details are, including the cutouts on grille, lights front and back, fender vents, rear lights, fender vents and texture on the hood. The skill and talent displayed here is incredible. While power tools are great for woodworking, the details on the Land Rover are best done by hand.
However, it’s not just about the chiselwork. Subframes are necessary for powertrain support. This Defender has full suspension. The front and rear components are mounted on a wooden base, rather than the body. Technically, you could consider it a full frame. The body is a single, carefully carved piece of wood. It makes sense to treat it as a unibody model. The wood Defender is a beautiful piece of automotive art when it has its wheels and tires (overtop red brake discs no less), and its interior completed.
Although the video is only 13 minutes in length, it was a result of hours and hours of hard work. We are eager to see what the next chapter brings.
