We’ll have to thank Geely for the 2020 Lotus Esprit

Two new sports cars are coming before the end of this decade.

Lotus is happy. The British sports car manufacturer is now part Chinese auto giant Geely and is looking forward with great hope. We will soon see the first ever crossover from the brand. It is based on Volvo’s SPA clever architecture. This will be followed by two new sport cars.

Jean-Marc Gales is announcing the creation of a new flagship model that will be near-supercar and will be placed above the Evora. It will be lighter, quicker, and more efficient than the Evora and “take it further.” The unnamed new vehicle will be based on the current marque platform. It features an extruded and riveted aluminum chassis with composite rear and front subframes.

Gales stated that the car would have class-leading characteristics due to its “efficiency, aerodynamics and agility, as well as braking working in harmony.” The car will likely continue to use Toyota power. In fact, the head honcho of Autocar Lotus confirmed that the Japanese engine manufacturer will continue to be used in the near future.

Details are scarce about the second sports car, but Gales said it would likely be a two-seater. Gales also suggested that it would be a little more luxurious than the current Elise because “the market has been moving a bit higher-end.” It could be able to fill the gap between Elise’s most powerful Elise or base Exige.

Lotus will also make use of the Volvo technology and money from Geely to create a premium crossover. This should be ready for production in 2022. The manufacturer, which is based in Norfolk, will be able to compete with luxury car manufacturers for the first-time. This is due to China being a large market for luxury cars.
