Strutted tires at a whole new level
A person can lay down on a bed made of nails and not be hurt because their body weight is distributed across many points. The same principle can be applied to your car’s wheels at least temporarily, according to a new video.
Because of the cold temperatures, Russia has this bizarre idea. The team starts with basic steel wheels and wraps metal around the tire mounting surface before welding nails around it. It’s a bit wobbly but it works.
The nails work well on tarmac that is snowy. They can take the weight of the car and still keep the engine running at low speeds. The Russians prove the concept and then push the limits. This is when things begin to unravel. The Russians end abruptly trying to drive the car off-road when it sinks into snow. It is clear that the nails wouldn’t give the required traction.
Things get worse from this point on. The long nails begin to bend and eventually collapse when you throttle down. When the car is unable to move forward due to so much damage, the experiment ends.
These guys thought up a clever, cheap way to spend winter time. They were even able monetize the idea on YouTube to make some extra rubles. However, don’t expect to see a lot of nails replacing your snow tires anytime soon.
