What Has the Ford Mondeo ST200 lost in power over the past 20 years?

The naturally aspirated V6 remains alive.

For many reasons, the Ford Contour SVT is our favorite car from the 1990s. Ford sold a similar car in Europe. It was called the Mondeo ST200 moniker, and it was based on the European Mondeo MK2. This was not the actual second generation model, but a major facelift of the Mondeo MK1 that was then introduced as a new nameplate for 1993’s Old Continent model year.

The Mondeo ST200 remains a highly praised, no-frills performance car. This is especially true in the United Kingdom, where one can be purchased for as low as a few hundred dollars. The Drivetribe team bought a beautiful performance blue Mondeo ST200 daily driver.

The car was built in 2000. It currently has 150,000 miles (2411,000 kilometers) on its odometer. The original 2.5-liter V6 naturally-aspirated engine under the hood produced 202 horsepower (151 kilowatts), and 173 pound feet (235 Newton-meterss) of torque. What percentage of these ponies still live after twenty years on the road? Let’s see.

Drivetribe converted the Mondeo ST200 into a Dyno. The best result was 169.37 horsepower (126.29kW). Important to remember that the dyno converted the wheel horsepower directly into crank power. This means that we are comparing apples with apples. The V6 engine has lost 33 hp (24.6kW).

The Mondeo’s Past

This is not surprising. There are many factors that contribute to this reduced output. The good news is that Drivetribe will restore the beautiful Mondeo ST200. We’re eager to see the results of the dyno after all the work has been completed.
