It is just as fast and efficient as the BMW M2 Competition.
After taking the BMW Z4 M40i to a quick lap of the Nurburgring in September 2018, Sport Auto’sChristian Gebhardt took the seat of the mechanically connected Toyota Supra A90. The lap of Nordschleife was completed by the Bimmer in 7 minutes, 55.41 seconds. However, the new Zupra finished the race in 7:52.17. The action on the five-gen coupe’s approach to the difficult corners of the German track is captured onboard by an onboard video.
How does the Supra compare to other sports cars? Christian Gebhardt, the same driver of the Supra, lapped the Ring in a nearly identical 7/52.36 and an M2 Competition last October. He needed 8:04 to accomplish the same task in the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR track-focused Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR a little more than a month ago.
We can go back in history. Sports Auto tested and lapped the M3 GTS in 2013, while the M4 Coupe, Aston Martin V12 Vantage S and the M4 Coupe almost tied the Supra’s 7 minutes 52.
Christian Gebhardt’s skills are evident, but a professional race car driver could likely cut a lot of time. We must also remember that this is just the base Supra (well there’s a four cylinder model in Japan), and Toyota has already said there will be many hotter variants. The Nurburgring lap times should fall further with the addition of more power and perhaps less weight from the potential GRMN variant.
