Ford underestimated the factory torque figure
In the mid-1980s, the Blue Oval took a risk with the Ford Mustang. A pony car was created by the company’s Special Vehicle Operations Department to replace the V8-powered GT trim with a turbocharged four cylinder engine. A new video by Late model Restoration shows a 1986 model, which is quite rare, on the dyno today to show how powerful it can make.
The 1984 Mustang SVO was powered by a 2.3-liter turbocharged four cylinder. This engine produced 175 horsepower (131 megawatts) and was identical to the 5.0-liter V8-powered GT. The factory rating for this 1986 Mustang SVO was 200 horsepower (149 kW) with 240 pound-feet (325 Newton meters) of torque.
The car is in stock with the exception of a higher-flowing fuel pump and an aftermarket booster controller. However, this was set at the factory setting to allow for this test. It has a 5-speed manual transmission.
This SVO produces 170.39 horsepower (127.1 kW) on the dyno. This is a 14.8 percent loss in driveline, which is acceptable for a vehicle that’s more than 30 years old.
The car produces 250.02 lb/ft (339 Nm), of torque at its wheels. This figure is 4.2 percent higher than the factory rating, suggesting that Ford may have underrated the factory number. If the 14.8 percent horsepower loss is maintained, the engine would produce around 287 lbft (389 Nm) at crank.
The SVO team equipped this model with performance-oriented parts such as roll bars, suspension bushings and Koni adjustable shocks. Although it was a solid performer, it only lasted three model years.
Only the E-Class is eligible for this kit, which will be available in 2016 and 2020. The kit won’t work with the mew, restyled E-Class model. But is it still a good deal for you? The Maybach S-Class is priced at more than $180,000 in the US. A used 2016 or 2017 E-Class model is available for significantly less. The prices for the newer E-Classes are still comparable to those of older models. India was the first country to convert an E-Class Maybach E-Class. The results are not bad. There are worse ways than spending $1,000.
