If the tires are worn unevenly.
Tesla has released a new update to its software that can display the current status of your car’s tires. Although the automaker didn’t announce the technology, observant customers quickly noticed the change and shared it with others.
Drive Tesla Canada reports that the new feature will tell you if your tires have worn down or if the tread depth has dropped too low. The system can also detect uneven tire wear. The publication took a screenshot of the warning message that informs the driver that the tire tread on the rear tire is too low. The software warns the driver to schedule for tire inspection and rotation.
How does it work? Although we don’t know the exact cause, Drive Tesla Canada reports that there is an easy and smart way to tell if a tire has a low tread depth. A tire that has lost its tread will become smaller, and it will start rotating more quickly than it did when it was brand new. Tesla likely measures how often the wheel rotates and compares that value to a preset value. As you can see, if a tire rotates faster than its preset value it means that it has lost tread and is getting smaller. The same principle applies to tires that rotate faster than others. This could indicate uneven wear. This feature is available in the 2021.44.5 software upgrade, according to our source.
We don’t yet know if the new feature will be available on all Tesla models. The EV automaker does not usually follow a strict launch schedule for its updates. This means that this update could arrive at random times during the next few days. You can read more about the Model 3 or Model Y to see if there are any other significant upgrades.
