2020 won’t arrive soon enough if the production car looks this good.
The 2020 model year will see the introduction of a new Subaru WRX. The Viziv Performance STI concept we saw at the Tokyo Auto Salon has already given us a glimpse. This car is actually a modified Viziv Performance concept that we saw at the Tokyo Auto Salon in October last year. Subaru has given us many hints that this design will be a strong indicator of the future rally-bred racing car.
We don’t want to wait until 2020, so Automedia created this rendering of the next-gen WRT STI. While there is plenty of detail on the Viziv Performance STI concept itself, this rendering brings it closer to reality. The headlights and side mirrors have a more production-like look. These are replacing the ultra-thin units found on the concept. The body kit of the concept is also less bulky and aggressive and it is dressed in World Rally Blue.
This rendering shows us a glimpse of the future STI, but what about performance? Although we don’t know much about the next STI, Subaru has provided some teasers. The engine will likely be smaller at 2.0 liters and receive electric assistance in a high-performance hybrid layout. These changes might cause concern for STI enthusiasts, but Subaru also confirmed that a manual transmission would be available for rally heroes, as well as all-wheel drive.
The 2019 WRX STI – the sendoff model for this generation – could be last Subie to sport an STI badge. The 310-horsepower (231 kilowatts) turbocharged four-cylinder boxer four-cylinder looks great. This render should give you an idea of what is to come – and the possibility of significantly more power in a hybrid AWD platform.
