Someone forgot to remove the fuel breather pipe cap. Oops.
Did you ever finish a major project and then send it out to the world only to realize that you had made a critical mistake?
It’s something I do quite often, but it can be quite cumbersome. But you would expect more from an automaker such as Nissan. After a critical but small error that could have caused the truck to run low on fuel, the company issued a recall for its Cummins-engined Titan Diesel XD pickup trucks.
The fuel tank breather pipe has a cap to prevent liquids or other contaminants from getting in between manufacture and installation. This cap must be removed when the fuel tank is being installed into the vehicle. The Titan’s tank fitter didn’t know this. Some cases didn’t have the pipe attached to the bed rail.
The National Highway Transport Safety Administration issued a recall notice stating that the tank was not properly ventilated. This can lead to inaccurate fuel gauge and distance from empty displays. The Titan could run out fuel without warning and possibly cause a crash.
It’s at the most, annoying to the driver. When a diesel vehicle runs low on fuel, the whole fueling system must be flushed before it can be refilled.
The defect affects 12,112 Titan Diesel XD models manufactured between August 7, 2015, and September 1, 2016. The truck is made at Nissan’s Canton plant in Mississippi, and the engine comes from Cummins’ Columbus facility.
The dealer will inspect the affected vehicles’ breather pipes and replace the fuel tank, fuel sending unit and/or fuel breather pipe as needed. Nissan has not yet provided a timeline for notifying owners of affected cars.
