Other sedans don’t seem so safe.
The world is a strange place for the Nissan brand as the automaker, its partners, institute a new global company plan. Asako Hoshino, the automaker’s executive vice-president, says that the venerable Skyline is still safe. Don’t be too excited.
Hoshino specifically refers to the current Skyline sedan. Americans will know it as the Infiniti sedan. She is not referring to the GT_R.
Japan’s newspaper reported recently that Nissan had stopped developing sedans in Japan, including the Cima and Fuga models. The Fuga is a related model to the Infiniti Q70 and the Cima to the Q70L.
“Last weekend, Nikkei Shimbun reported the suspension of development of the Skyline and that the curtain had fallen on the development this Nissan symbol. According to Car Watch Impress, Hoshino stated that Nissan will not give up on its Skyline during the launch the Nissan Note Aura e-POWER.
It is worth noting, however, that she did not deny the Fugas and Cima were leaving.
An article from 2020 may shed some light on the plans of Nissan for its premium models. By sharing technology and platforms between divisions , the brand plans to transform Infiniti in to “Nissan+”. This could lead to Infiniti selling far fewer rear-wheel drive products.
Skyline actually existed before it was a Nissan model. The original generation was introduced in 1957 by the Prince Motor Company. The sedan was retained by Prince Motor Company after Nissan and Prince merged in 1966.
The Skyline is currently in its thirteenth generation in Japan. In 2013, the Skyline was introduced as a sedan. A styling update was made in 2019 to make the vehicle more like the GT-R, and add more safety tech.
