Original BMW 8 Series Redesigned for 2021. But Should It?

This is a new take on BMW’s luxury grand touringer.

The original BMW 8 Series (E31), was a small breakthrough for the brand and the industry. Its sleek profile, pop-up headlights and avant-garde interior will convince you that it isn’t a car from 30 years ago.

BMW is a modern successor of the 8 Series, and it plays a similar part in the brand’s lineup. This grand tourer is high-end, luxurious, and packed with tech. It also has a variety of performance options from various combustion engines. It’s missing the styling spirit of the original coupe.

Designer TheSketchMonkey was probably thinking the exact same thing when he began drawing a modern successor of the 8 Series. He reimagines 840i as “ultimate Autobahn GT”, a 12-minute video. His design influences are more apparent from the 1990s model than those of the 8 Series.

He takes a stunning 840i and transforms its frontend. The i8 is combined with small kidney grilles. The old-fashioned pop-up headlight arrangement is gone. These are replaced with sleeker LED clusters that are integrated into the front fascia. This 8 Series has seen visual improvements in terms of side mirrors, side skirts, wheels that are wider, stronger rear fenders, pop-out door handles, and beefier side skirts.
