Polestar 2 gets Single-Motor and ‘Simplified Two-Motor’ Variants

Lower sticker price but still packed full of features

The Polestar 2 first appeared on our radar in 2019. Now, the Launch Edition of this Tesla competitor can be purchased. This EV is a high-riding version of the Polestar1 and will be a major seller for Volvo’s electric spinoff. Polestar is introducing two new versions to the 2. This could make it more attractive for price-conscious buyers.

The most significant news is the single-motor Polestar 2, which turns only the front wheels. The rear motor will be dropped, resulting in a loss of half the 408 combined horsepower (304 combined Kilowatts) from dual-motor Launch Edition. However, the single motor’s output is increased to 231 HP (172 kW). The single-motor Polestar 2 keeps the same 78 kWh battery and delivers an EPA range of approximately 260 miles.

For the second option, those who want dual-motor power but not all the bells and whistles that the Launch Edition offers can now order their own Polestar 2. The 408 horsepower engine is still available, but buyers have the option to choose from several options. The Pilot Pack, which includes a variety of driver-assist, safety, and suspension systems, as well as the Performance Pack, which adjusts the suspension and brakes. There is also the Plus Pack, which adds premium features such a panoramic roof, heated seat, and WeaveTech vegan interior material.

The Plus Pack, which includes a mechanical heat-pump, is the most notable of these packages. Polestar claims that it can increase vehicle range up to 10% in certain conditions, especially during colder temperatures. It works by utilizing both ambient temperature and residual heat from your powertrain to reduce the power draw of the battery pack for climate control. The tech is still in development so future updates may make it more efficient. Despite all this, features such as large touchscreens and 19-inch wheels remain standard, along with tech like Google Assistant.

According to Thomas Ingenlath (Polestar CEO), “2021 will be the year Polestar 2 really gains momentum.” We launched the car with a strong offer, which set a high standard for the vehicle. We now have additional models to expand our offering – each one keeping its distinctive design, premium quality and fun driving experience. We have managed to preserve the premium feel and character of the lower-priced Polestar 2 models with the new versions. Even the most economical Polestar2, which has no option packs, is very consistent in appearance and comes with a high standard of equipment.

Polestar won’t share pricing for either the single-motor or base model dual-motor versions of the new Polestar 2, Launch Edition. However, both models will be priced below the $59900 Polestar 2. The point-of-entry edition with a single motor should be available at the end.
