Lamborghini broke the record for fastest road-legal car on the Nurburgring circuit with a time 6 mins and 52.01. On September 20, 2017, Lamborghini lost the title when Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS required 6:47.3 for a lap through the Green Hell. The brotherly ‘Ring-time duel between Sant’Agata and Stuttgart didn’t end there. Lamborghini returned with the Aventador Superveloce Jota to the Nordschleife. Time? That would be 6 :44.97.
Porsche is back with a vengeance. With the support of Manthey-Racing it holds the record for fastest car at the Nürnbergring that you can legally drive on public roads. The 911 GT2 RS crossed the finish line in 6 minutes 40.3, seven seconds faster than the standard model. Lars Kern, a 31-year old Porsche tester and development engineer who set a new record with the stock 911 GT2 RS, was behind the wheel of the record-breaking vehicle.
Details about the upgrade package have not been disclosed, but Porsche does say the 911 GT2 RS featured an “an overall vehicle setup tailored to the circuit characteristics of the Nurburgring-Nordschleife.” In addition, the driver’s seat was modified compared to the version of the track-focused car available from Manthey-Racing.
It is faster than the McLaren P1 LM, which was modified by Lanzante. The modified GT2 RS lap time is impressive. This P1 GTR modified and took 6 minutes and 43.2 second . It’s also faster that the fully electric Nio E9 ( 6;45.9).
It is only a matter time before another car takes the title. Two models immediately spring to mind: the Mercedes-AMG One, and the Aston Martin Valkyrie.
