Porsche 911 Topped With Tent Is Not A Typical Overlander [UPDATE]

This is the ideal weekend camper for those who prefer to carve canyons than climb them.

All sorts of off-road camper designs gathered in Flagstaff, Arizona last weekend at Overland ExpoWest. We aren’t sure that the tent-wearing Porsche 911 Carrera was there. However, the photo above did appear while we were browsing the Overland Expo hashtag on Instagram. Fort Tuthill County Park was where the event took places. We were astonished at this amazing car, and we did some research to find out more about the owner.

Elferspot.com featured a cool feature about this unusual overlanding machine. Brock Keen, the man behind this idea, has his Instagram account @996RoadTrip filled with photos of different 911 travel adventures. It’s a 996 Carrera 4S and, while it doesn’t have as much ground clearance to make its own roads, it is more confident on backroad trips than many low-slung sports cars. Keen’s Instagram account shows that the car does make regular trips off the asphalt.

The Yakima tent ended up on Porsche’s roof accidentally. The Elferspot article states that the tent was an impulse purchase. However, he found it required special hardware to fit it onto the Range Rover, which he and his wife use for camping trips. Keen discovered that the Porsche had roof bars, and it could fit on top of the car quite easily. So the tent was born. The idea of taking the Porsche on camping trips was something Keen liked. Yakima Racks helped him determine that the 911’s roof would be able to handle the challenge.

You won’t find a fridge or a handy propane stove in the 911, but you will find them on a converted Jeep Gladiator. We think it’s a fair trade to sacrifice a few camping amenities to enjoy proper canyon carving in the great outdoors.
