Porsche 928 from ‘Risky business’ sold for way more than we expected

It holds the record for any Porsche 928 sold at auction in any year.

If you do a quick search for a Porsche 928 that is up for auction, there are examples that have bids of around $20,000 This particular example is not a regular front-engine Porsche coupe. It’s Tom Cruise’s costar in the 1983 film Ridiculous Business. The hammer price at the Barrett-Jackson Houston auction was $1,980,000.

This 1979 Porsche 928 is now the world record holder in auction sales of Porsche 928s from any year according to Barrett-Jackson.

This celebrity 928 will be the headliner of the event which sells for $37.5 million. The auction house reported that the Houston auction in 2021 had a 100% sell-through rate, 34 world-record auctions sales and surpassed over 200 world records.

The Porsche 928 was not only a movie star but Cruise also used it to learn how to drive manual cars. It wasn’t the car that ended up at the bottom of Lake Michigan. It’s actually one of three cars on-screen during filming, and one of two used in the famous car chase scene.

A little trivia: Risky Business director Paul Brickman preferred the 928 to the Porsche 911, as he felt the latter was “too boring” in comparison to the former. This particular 928 was originally painted green, but it was later tanned to suit its role. It is now part of a climate-controlled private collection.

Barrett-Jackson did not reveal the name of the wealthy buyer for this 928, but it was worth more than we expected considering its celebrity status. It’s safe to say that the new owner of this piece of Hollywood history should be happy.
