These are faster than stick-shift models, and here are the numbers.
Porsche announced the changes to the 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman models for the 2021 model years – especially in the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder – and also the announcement of the long-awaited PDK (PDK) for six-cylinder models. However, the release contained more how much you will spend on them than the numbers supporting the claim.
It’s now time to see how the PDK-equipped models compare to their stick-shift counterparts.
Porsche claims that the 718 Cayman GT4, 718 Spyder models with optional seven speed, dual-clutch acceleration accelerates from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.7 seconds. This is faster than their manual counterparts’ 4.2 seconds. The PDK-equipped 718 Boxster/Cayman GTS 4.0 models can accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.8 seconds, which is faster than the manual’s 4.3 seconds.
All the models mentioned here have more torque when equipped PDK. This is specifically 8 pound-feet less than the standard 309 pound – 419 Newton-meters (419 Newton-meters), of the stick-shift, naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-6 mill. When compared with other PDK-equipped 718s, they all have a shorter seventh gear ratio (0.71 versus 0.62).
The 718 Cayman GT4 is more powerful than the 718 Spyder, and both models have more traction when fitted with PDK. This is because the limited-slip differential operates with higher locking values that with manual transmission. It can achieve 30 percent in traction, and 37 percent overrun (compared with 22 percent and 27% with the manual).
Porsche has also announced that the 718 Boxster/Cayman GTS 4.0 comes as standard with Sport Chrono Package. Those who opt for the PDK will get an additional Sport Response button to their steering wheel. The Auto Blip button on the 718 Cayman GT4 manual and 718 Spyder manual will be replaced by a PDK Sport option.
The 2021 Porsche 718 models will not be limited to performance upgrades and numbers. According to the release, the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder models can be had in Python Green, while the 718 Spyder can be ordered with Aurum color wheels and summer tires instead of the standard Ultra-High-Performance tires.
The PDK gear selector for the 718 Cayman GT4 or 718 Spyder models will be available in 911 GT3 design as an added bonus.
