This is how the first 911 with a mid-engine was created.
Porsche has been making waves this week. It released a video in tribute to its 70th anniversary. This is quite touching. A milestone was also achieved at the dreaded Nürnberging. The 919 Evo set the record for the fastest lap at the Green Hell in 5 minutes and 19.55 seconds, beating Timo Bernhard’s previous record of 6 minutes 11.13 seconds. The previous record was held by a Porsche 956 C by Stefan Bellof, which took 6 minutes 11.13 seconds.
Porsche now looks back on another iconic model that ruled the roads during the 1990s. The 911 GT1Evo was created through homologation under FIA’s unique rules.
Porsche released a video that outlines the history of the 911 GT1. The BPR Global GT Series was the birthplace of the first mid-engined 911. 911 GT1 was designed to compete in supercars at the top of the race.
Porsche must build legal road-legal versions in order to be eligible for the FIA’s approval. The company created 21 911 GT1 Evolution units. Road-legal versions were powered by a 544-horsepower biturbo-V6 boxer engine with a maximum speed of 310 km/h (193 miles/h).
The 911 GT1’s success extends to the track. In 1998, it finished first and second in the GT1 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was a very successful run for 911 GT1, a wonderful addition to Porsche’s heritage.
