Production of Peugeot iOn and Citroen C-Zero has been halted

Due to low sales, Mitsubishi decided not to produce the i-MiEV-based Citroen C-Zero or Peugeot iOn.

Mitsubishi Motors announced this week that the Peugeot iOn has been discontinued and the Citroen C-Zero has been halted due to low sales. Both cars were built in Japan and are based on Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV. Although both Mitsubishi and PSA Peugeot Citroen said that the temporary stop was temporary, they did not reveal when production will resume.

According to market research firm JATO Dynamics in Europe, PSA sold only 935 CZeros and 852 iOns to Europe within the first six months. As part of a deal to supply 100,000 cars, the Japanese automaker has been shipping these vehicles to PSA since 2010. While the i-MiEV was first introduced in 2009, the other two models were launched one year later. Mitsubishi produced just 29,000 of these three models.

Mitsubishi spokesperson said that although the production total was lower than expected, it won’t affect the agreement to co-develop EV versions for the Citroen Berlingo or the Peugeot Partner.
