It is unlikely that you will see it in the United States.
Jeep remained firmly in the five-passenger category despite the advent of SUVs and crossovers. With the unveiling of the new Wagoneer, and the Grand Cherokee, this is all changing. Jeep is also developing a smaller, three-row crossover that will be based on the Compass. However, it won’t be called Grand Compass. It could be a new Patriot.
This is supported by evidence. Jeep holds the trademark for Patriot around the globe until 2025. It was filed in 2000, before the Patriot’s launch for 2007. It was sold worldwide, but its connection to the Compass, also launched it in 2007, was perhaps more significant. The platform and drivetrain shared the same model, but the Patriot adopted a larger, more chunkier appearance.
According to spy photos we can see that the new three-row compact crossover will be a Compass with an even larger backside to allow for seven-passenger seating. The Compass-Patriot connection made it all the more sense to rename this slightly beefier model.
According to our sources, the new three-row will not be just a carbon-copy Compass with additional seating. Although the exterior looks are similar, the front fascia may have a unique design inspired by the Grand Cherokee. Apart from the obvious addition of seats, there might be some minor differences in the interior. We hear that the engine will be a 2.0-liter turbodiesel and a nine-speed auto for all-wheel drive models. Front-wheel-drive models get a smaller, 1.3-liter gasoline.
This may sound strange for a Patriot new in America, but it’s not likely to be sold in the US. The new Jeep will be available for Brazil and India. We expect an official announcement on its name to come in April.
