It is still large. It’s actually wider than the original.

Fans have been sending BMW a lot of criticism about the new 4 Series Coupe design with the large grille. The Concept 4 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this month. It clearly modeled after the next-gen 4er coupe. However, some design cues may be less prominent on the road-going model.

A previous rendering suggested a normal size of the kidneys attached to the same Concept 4. Now, we are presented with a Motor1.com reader’s vision of the love/hate Grille. It is not much smaller than the original design. It’s actually larger than the original design by BMW’s designers, as it extends to the sides and meets the corners of the headlights.

The controversial grille was inspired by icons like the 3.0 CSi or the 328 according BMW. It has been stripped of its thick metal frame to match the appearance of the large air intakes located at the corners. This gives the car a more slender appearance, and we prefer it to its original design. But, as always, beauty is in one’s eye.

Whether you like it or not, larger BMW grilles will be around for the long-term. After the X7 facelifted 7 Series, prototypes for the next generation M3 were found to have enlarged kidneys. Logic suggests that there is a good chance that the new 4 series Convertible, which we have seen on multiple occasions, also had the new corporate grille. As you can see, Vision M Next, i Vision Dynamics and Vision Next 100 all had chunky grilles.

BMW defends its large singleframe grille. Lexus’ huge spindle grille is a problem. We can tolerate the giant kidneys.

The production-ready 4 Series Coupe will likely be available sometime in 2020. It will soon be joined by the soft-top convertible, which will replace the current metal roof configuration.
