The Mustang Mach-E is not the Evos, despite similar side profiles.
Ford’s Evos was unveiled yesterday at the Auto Shanghai Show. Most people assumed that the wagonized SUV would soon be heading to North America and Europe. The Mondeo is in its final days and Fusion was destroyed last year. So the Blue Oval must be thinking of something to replace it. Since July 2018, rumors of a Subaru Outback competitor have been swirling, but Ford says that the Evos is exclusive to China.
Mike Levine, Ford Product Communications Manager, was asked Twitter if there were plans to bring it stateside. He was very clear in his answer: “Evos is only for customers in China.” It is not currently planned to be offered elsewhere. This statement is surprising considering that prototypes of the high-riding vehicle were spotted in North America and Europe in recent months.
We still have hope that the Evos could be sold outside the People’s Republic. As the international version may have a different design, the test vehicles had LED daytime running lamps that were not available on the Chinese model. Ford may be changing the headlights or making other changes to make it more appealing to global tastes. It remains to be seen if these potential changes extend to the huge screen inside.
Official images have revealed that the Evos isn’t an electric vehicle. The rear shows an exhaust under the bumper. This makes sense, as the rumor mill claims that the hybrid powertrain will be used in the Euro-bound and US-bound models.
Mike Levine acknowledged that the Evos, Mustang Mach–E have similar silhouettes but the latter was designed from the beginning as an EV. The Evos architecture is capable of housing a combustion engine, as indicated by the open mesh grille that cools the ICE.
Reports suggest that the global version may be called something else. Some have suggested the Mondeo / Fusion Active. Ford didn’t want the Evos’ thunder in China so they might not have confirmed the international model immediately. The wagon/SUV mashup remains a China-exclusive product.
