Do not hold your breath.
Opel unveiled the next-gen Astra this week. It features a brand new design, updated underpinnings and a completely redesigned interior. It’s all exciting, but we are already excited about the possibility of a hotter GSi model. Opel has resurrected the sporty name for its most powerful performance cars in 2017 and we are hopeful that the new Astra will be part of its revival. The new rendering, which is unofficial, was created by X-Tomi Design. It shows what it might look like, even if that seems unlikely.
Bright orange paint is applied to the sharp-edge hatchback, which stands out against the roof and black pillars. A black bonnet is added to the contrast with the orange grille trim and fascia. This rendering gives the hatch a new set wheels, a wider front fascia, black bumper accents and a body kit. It is a bit lower than the standard hatch, which gives it a sporty look.
Opel has not indicated that it is developing an Astra GSi. This would be in addition to the more sporty versions of the VW Golf and Ford Focus. Opel has not yet provided details about the Astra’s powertrains. However, it shares its underpinnings and should share its engines. Unfortunately, this is not good news for Astra GSi owners. Peugeot has shut down plans for a sportier 308 GTI/Sport Engineered Variant.
Opel only stated that the Astra’s powertrains will be available in a range of gasoline and diesel engines, ranging from 110 to 225 horsepower (81 – 165 kilowatts). In its top trim, the Peugeot 308 produces 225 horsepower. It also has a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This will most likely make its way into the new Astra. The Astra GSi rendering is not yet in production. Opel will likely stick the GSi badge to the hybrid model.
