Temperature-Sensitive Paint Makes Audi A4 Look Wild

Although it’s not right for everyone, it is definitely for you.

Modern technology makes it easy to personalize your vehicle. There are many options available, including a respray, dip or wrap. As such, Fonzie of DipYourCar showcases on video what temperature-sensitive paint looks like on an Audi A4.

It would be remiss of us not to mention that these crazy paint jobs may not be for everyone. But don’t be discouraged if you find the science behind such complex paint jobs to be quite fascinating.

Although it’s likely that you haven’t seen one in a while, the paint shown here works on the same principle. The automotive application uses thermotropic liquid crystals, which can produce different colors at different temperatures. This variant, unlike other heat-sensitive paint jobs that use thermochromic pigments before, is more sensitive and produces a wider range of colors.

The team applied a base coat with plastidip and then sprayed eight coats of special paint to achieve the desired effect. The car transformed into a rainbow of colors as soon as it left the spray booth. As you would expect, the finish creates a pseudo-thermal camera effect that changes before your eyes as you interact with it.

Fonzie said that the final result is as cool as it looks. However, this was a fun test to see if the possibilities are. He suggested that a second layer of sealer be applied to protect the finish against regular wear and tear. It was impressive to see the mood rings effect on a car, despite semantics.
