It will be up for auction in January, but it won’t go cheap.
Ford will sell you a new GT supercar for $400,000… subject to your approval. According to Ford, there will be only 250 of these cars produced each year. What if you want something more? This last-gen Ford GT prototype is worth your investment.
Ford GT Confirmation Prototype 1 is the first fully functional prototype built by the company leading up to 2005 production. It also features a fully interior. This was the fourth overall example, following three display models from 2003. It wears the VIN 0004.
Although it looks ready for production, there are still parts that were only used for testing. For emissions testing, the “sniffer” pipe was included. Also included was a carbon fiber shell that cost more than $45,000, a quick release fuel tank, black supercharger, valve covers, and even a steering column from a Windstar minivan.
It also bears the signatures 13 members of Ford GT’s original design and development team including Bill Ford, Chief Designer Camillo Perdo and even Carroll Shelby. There is one small problem, however, as cool as this all sounds. The car was only used for display and test purposes. Its top speed is , which is a staggering five miles per hour (eight km per hour).
In 2008, Ford sold it as-is to “GT Joey”, an avid collector who literally wrote the book about the Ford GT. It will be auctioned in January as part of Russo & Steele Arizona’s sale in Scottsdale. Although no price estimates have been made, GT prototype CP-2 sold in Monterey for $800,000. This means that it could sell for a million dollars.
