The VW Golf R Vs. the Golf GTI 45 Clubsport Drag Racing Is Not Even Close

The Golf R is therefore more expensive.

The Volkswagen Golf MK8 sports range currently offers several performance levels based on the exact same architecture. GTE, GTI and GTD are entry-level hot hatches that run on electrified, gasoline and diesel powertrains. The Clubsport and R versions unlock the full potential of the new generation Golf in production form. How big is the performance difference between these trims?

We saw the GTI race the Clubsport in August. The latter took a comfortable win over its less-experienced brothers despite having comparatively lower performance. We can now compare the Clubsport with the Golf R. Again, the differences are clear.

A new video from the Motorsport Magazine channel YouTube shows us the drag strip, where a blue Golf R meets the silver Golf GTI Clubsport. This is the 45 special edition, which was revealed in a nod towards the original Golf GTI. Under the hood, it has a turbocharged 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 296 horsepower (221 megawatts). The hatchback is 3,146 pounds and weighs 1,427 kilograms.

The Golf R features a more powerful version (320 HP/235 kW) of the same four-cylinder unit. This power sends power to all four wheels. The increased traction is at the expense of 256 pounds (116kg) more weight than the FWD model. The Golf R is the performance flagship of Golf’s family. It has better traction and more power.

We’re sure that you have read the headline and are confident in your knowledge of which car will win the drag racing. The video at the top is not too long and shows the difference between the two fast Golfs.
