The hybridization phase will be skipped by the performance division.
Volkswagen is known for its ambitious plans regarding electrified future products. It will be the company’s first all-electric vehicle and could open the door to electric performance vehicles.
VW has admitted that it is looking at a stronger I.D. We’ve heard VW admit it is considering a more powerful I.D. before, but this hint seems stronger. Jost Capito (head of Volkswagen R’s Division), recently spoke out for Top Gear. Capito, who is known for his passion for motorsports, stated that he would like Volkswagen’s performance cars to move straight to full-electric powertrains.
He told British publication that a hybrid does not provide the same performance as a full-size car. The power goes away after you have done half a lap. You have the combustion, but no power, and the 200kg of battery remains. This is something I can’t understand in a performance car.
This makes perfect sense. What’s the solution? Of course, it’s pure electric power.
“So that’s how I see the step going electric; it could be a full internal combustion engine or full electric.
Capito’s words are supported by Volkswagen, where Jurgen Stackmann, a Volkswagen board member, said: “Clearly there is a big future of I.D. R. The racecar was an experiment in electric car driving to show the world that it is exciting, fun, and superior in many aspects.” The I.D. is the vehicle Stackmann refers to. R Pikes Peak (pictured below) is the fastest car currently running the 12.42-mile (20 km) Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado.
Although nothing is yet confirmed, these words suggest that an electric performance R-badged Volkswagen model is possible. We are hopeful that it will be produced.
