This Car Is Literally Worth Its Weight in Gold

It’s obviously a Ferrari.

You’re probably a big fan of vehicle auctions. Barrett-Jackson’s COVID-delayed Scottsdale sale took place on March 22. There were some impressive million-dollar sales during primetime weekends. The first-production Ford Bronco was sold for just under $1 million while the first-production GMC Hummer was valued at $2.5 million. This is a serious amount of money to buy the first vehicle, but it made us think about value.

It got people at Reddit thinking. Their line of thought was admittedly a little more creative than ours. Everyone is familiar with the phrase worth its salt in gold. It’s a clichéd way to say something is truly valuable. But how valuable are cars? A typical vehicle weighing 4,000 pounds (1,814 kilogram) would require a sale price of almost $110 million to be worth gold’s current value at $1,713 an ounce. We know of at least one vehicle that sold for more than $55 million, despite the fact that it weighs half as much. The Ferrari 250 GTO.

The 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO was the most expensive vehicle sold in 2018. It sold for $70 million . If the GTO was made completely from gold, the value would be $57.4million. The Ferrari 250 GTO is worth less than it’s weight in gold. Or at least that car was. GTO is also the most expensive public vehicle auction. However, at $48million it is a little less than gold. You get the idea.

This trivia gives us a fresh perspective on what it is like to see a 250 GTO anywhere in public. It’s possible that the value of GTOs will continue to rise, as there are only 36 built in 1960s.
