Three-Motor GMC Hummer EV May Be In Same GVWR Class As Silverado 3500

Two-motor versions might not be as powerful and may be of lower quality.

The GMC Hummer EVO has a slow rollout. This includes both two-motor and three-motor powertrains. According to new information, the different models of the truck will have different EPA weight ratings.

“We are actually going to span several different classes,” Hummer EV Lead Development Engineer Aaron Pfau told Muscle Cars and Trucks. “We will soon be able to get into higher mass (GVWR), but we know that we will have other classes and different categories based upon the subsequent rollout of Edition 1.

According to MC&T, the three-motor Hummer EV could be a Class 3 truck. It would have a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 to 14,000 lbs (4,536 to 6,350 kg). The Chevy Silverado 3500 and Ford F-350 are other pickups in this category.

The less powerful two-motor Hummer Electric EV may be a Class 2 truck. Pickups in class 2A range from 6,001 to 8,500 pounds (2.722 to 3.856 kilograms), and include models such as the Ford F-150. Class 2B is for models such as the F-250 and has a GVWR between 8,501 and 10,000 pounds (3.856 to 4,536 kg).

GVWR, which is essentially a way to determine a vehicle’s maximum safety weight, is calculated by adding the truck’s curb weight to its maximum load (including passengers and cargo). The figure is used by government agencies to classify vehicles. For Class 7 and above, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required with a GVWR at least 26,001 pounds (1,794 kg). However, other regulations may also be required to obtain a CDL in order to drive a vehicle.

A letter sent by Tesla to California Air Resources Board December 2019 stated that the Cybertruck would fall in either the 2B class or the 3 class. Although it doesn’t mention the model’s gross vehicle weight (GVWR), it indicates that it can tow 7,500 to more than 14,000 pounds (3.402 to 6,350 kgs).
