Three Porsche 911 models in retro-style are on their way

If they do arrive, expect old-fashioned charm and great performance.

Porsche is proud of its heritage as a sports car manufacturer. It frequently displays a range of retro-inspired trims and editions. The Porsche 718 Boxster 25 years is the latest example. We’ll be posting our review on Tuesday. Three heritage-flavored 911 sport cars are in development, according to Motor Trend.

The buff book claims that there will be a new 911 Sport Classic. This is a revival of a name used in 2010 on 250 Carrera 4S coupes. They got special paint, interiors, ducktail spoilers, and more power. The new Sport Classic may be more powerful than the Turbo S’s 541-horsepower, 733-kilowatt (477-kilowatt) engine. It is paired only with a manual transmission and rear wheel drive. It could be the most powerful stick-shift Porsche street car, surpassing the legendary Carrera GT supercar with its 603-hp V10 (450-kW).

A redux of the 1970 911 ST could be another retro Porsche. The ST was built by the customer sports department of the automaker. It featured a wider body, a stronger engine and other goodies that made it more adept than the standard car it replaced. The same formula will be used for the new 911 ST. Motor Trend claims it will be powered by the GT3’s naturally aspirated flat-six 4.0-liter . This could produce more power than the current 502 horsepower (369 kW) offer. The ST was not equipped with a decklid like the 911 Carrera RS. Porsche will likely follow the tradition to pay tribute.

Its 50th anniversary, which is a special occasion for this distinctively spoilt race, is rapidly approaching. It would not surprise us if the automaker honored the 1973 Carrera RS’ original with a modernized version based upon today’s 911. Motor Trend suggests it could be based upon the GTS. However, we believe the Carrera-RS’ street/racing personality would be more suited to the GT3 Touring. We agree with Motor Trend’s prediction that a neo-1973 edition of the magazine would sport a ducktail spoiler and retro interior upholstery. This will improve performance.

Porsche did not comment on the rumors, but it did say that it does not “participate in or speculate on future products.” However, daydreaming is better than real life, so we trust Porsche to deliver on our high expectations.
