The new 86 sports car will be available, but what about a retro-looking sports car?
Toyota is the manufacturer of some of the most iconic sports cars in automotive history. The Japanese manufacturer still has the Supra and should have a new generation of 86 in its lineup very soon. As they say, the more the merrier is better. So what’s the harm in adding another two-door model to its portfolio?
The car in the gallery is virtual and does not exist in real life. It’s a shame, as it serves an ideological successor to Toyota AE86 sports cars. Although the 86 may play this role, this model is more faithful to the original design.
Rain Prisk, the designer behind the project, explains that he created this rendering to show a possible retro-inspired design for a new 86. It carries the spirit of the AE86. He explains that the car is almost identical in dimensions to the GT86’s predecessor, but it’s just slightly wider.
There are many details that give strong AE86 vibes. The two-tone exterior finish has a black lower section and another black stripe above it. This visually divides the panels into three sections. Modernized from the original alloys, the black rims have a single spoke with a contrasting white color.
This design is far more modern than the original AE86’s slightly edgier shapes. We are missing the pop-up headlights from the AE86 Trueno. However, this modernized version blends the vintage look with sleek LED headlights. We like the idea of having fatter taillights to give a nod back to the original, but the rendering shows the thinner units.
