Toyota Corolla to Get GR, Hydrogen Versions in Late 2022: The Report

Toyota’s combustion engine would power the hydrogen models.

According to a report by Forbes, the Toyota Corolla will arrive in late 2022. According to the same report, the brand will also launch hydrogen-powered versions the Prius, and Corolla in coming years.

The Corolla GR (shown below) will reportedly adopt the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive system from , the European-market GR Yaris. The mill produces 257 horsepower (192 Kilowatts) as well as 266 pound-feet (362 Newton-meters). According to reports, the Corolla will be available with a five door hatchback body.

Japan had previously rumored that the Corolla GR could produce 296 horsepower (221 kilowatts). is a tuned version 1.6-liter three-cylinder. According to rumors, the power would be transmitted through a six speed manual.

According to Forbes, a version Toyota’s hydrogen fuel combustion engine is in production. This strange powerplant does not use traditional fuel cells. Instead, it uses hydrogen to fuel its combustion. Toyota claims that this system emits very little CO2 and some NOx.

According to Forbes, the new Prius is expected to arrive in December 2022. The new Prius will be equipped with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and hybrid assistance. A hydrogen-powered PHEV will be added to the range later.

In 2023, a Corolla with a hydrogen-fueled combustion engine will also be available.

It is unclear how Toyota will address the problem of no hydrogen refueling infrastructure. The US Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Map does not show any publicly available hydrogen locations in California. Only a few sites are located in Canada.

Toyota finally gets serious about EVs, even though these hydrogen models are niche products. The bZ4X will be the first to go on sale in 2022. By 2025, the company will have seven bZ models for sale.
