The engine internals, except the valve springs, are all still in stock.
The Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch is a small, impressive machine straight out of the factory. But, the Australian men in this video push its 1.6-liter three cylinder engine as hard as they can. The engine is capable of being tuned while keeping the internals stock.
This small engine produces 472.84 horsepower (3552.6 kilowatts) at its wheels according to the dyno. The factory estimates the 1.6-liter mill to be 257 horsepower (192 kW). The mill shown in this video produces around twice the original output when you add in the loss of the drivetrain.
The engine received an updated MAP sensor and an upgraded fuel pump. It also got a surge tank. The tuners were able to increase the engine’s output from its previous output of approximately 429 HP (320 kW).
The sensors indicate that the engine is not at its limit. There are no oil pressure, coolant, or fuel problems. Detonation and misfires are also not possible.
The stock throttle body and intake manifold are still used. New valve springs are the only significant engine modification. The intercooler can be bolted in to replace the original. However, revised camshafts will be available.
This Yaris’ goal is to run a quarter-mile in ten seconds. It’s possible to run a quarter-mile in a time of just 10.723, while the car produces 362 horsepower (270 kW). It’s sure to get faster, but it will be difficult to cut off a second with more than 100 horsepower.
The owner plans to enter the World Time Attack Challenge clubsprint class with the Yaris next year. This will mean tuning the car for a track instead of the quarter-mile. It might also require lower engine output.
