Humble no more.
The Toyota MR2 was discontinued in 2007. However, it is still regarded as one the most iconic sports cars of Toyota. The automaker has been arguing about a successor to MR2 since 2007, with one executive saying he would like to see Porsche partner with Toyota to develop a new lightweight sports car.
It seems that Toyota is not planning to bring back the legendary nameplate, at least not in the near- and mid-term. Toyota has three sports cars in its global lineup: the Supra and the new GR 86. A revival is not a priority. Don’t expect a new MR2 from Toyota.
Now, forget everything that we have said. Let’s now move on to another reality. Toyota is building a new MR2 but needs assistance with its design. Designer RainPrisk has a new interpretation of the sports car. His rendering can be seen at the top of the article. We can only admire it.
It is worth noting that the car is a little too futuristic to be what it really is. The original MR2 was a more conservative design, which suited its humble nature well, despite the fact that it had a mid-engine layout. This rendering shows the sports car as being significantly more expensive than its predecessor.
If we look at it from a different perspective, the new MR2 could be all-electric. In that case, this design would be a great match for the technology underneath. We can see a single-motor RWD electric system from Stuttgart that would power the car, turning it into an invisible rocket. This is what a Toyota executive wants to Porsche.
