Could this be BMW’s S58 twin turbo inline-six with twin-turbo?
Rumours suggest that Toyota has been hot-shoeing an even more powerful engine into its Supra. The S58 BMW M3 engine was reported as early as July this year. Sources claim that the information was a result of an insider tip. Markus Flasch, president of BMW M division, didn’t deny that there was a possibility but said it wasn’t likely.
These early reports shouldn’t be taken lightly. However, this spy video from Youtube statesidesupercars claims that it spotted a Supra testing an engine.
We embedded the video below to illustrate the difference in engine sound. The difference in sound quality is not significant, but there are many options for it such as aftermarket upgrades.
However, speculation backs the earlier reports. The BMW M3’s model S58 is likely to be used by Supra GRMN. It has a very powerful 503 horsepower (375kilowatts) as well as 479 pound-feet (475 Newton-meters). These numbers will be transmitted to the rear wheels via BMW’s seven-speed DCT.
Although the rumor is interesting, we should also consider that BMW doesn’t want to lend its M-infused engines out to other automakers. This happened last year with the McLaren F1 which used a BMW S70 V12 engine. It’s possible, but not impossible, as we have already mentioned.
These speculations should be taken with a pinch of salt, as there is no confirmation at this stage. Do you think the Supra was different in the video? Please let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
