Toyota USA Shows How Diesels Work And People Are Already Speculating

This comes from an automaker which sells no diesel cars in the US.

The vast majority of European trucks are powered by diesel engine. However, the situation is quite different in the United States. Toyota has posted a video explaining how diesel engines work on its YouTube channel. It begs the question:

It is worth noting that the video was posted on July 26th, which was just one day before the latest round 2022 Tundra teasers. YouTube, Reddit claim that this video is not coincidental (or bad timing), and that the next generation Toyota full-size truck will get a diesel engine. This is a stretch considering how much the Japanese automaker is focusing its efforts on electrification.

Motortrend discovered a trademark for “Hybrid Max”. With Toyota already teasing a new i-Force Max engine, it could be that the large truck will eventually become electrified. It is possible that the hybrid powertrain will use a twin-turbo V6. This would be the engine from the Land Cruiser’s 3.5-liter unit. It produces 409 horsepower (305kilowatts) as well as 479 pound-feet (475 Newton-meters) of torque.

What if the Tundra actually gets a diesel engine? A new twin-turbo, 3.3-liter unit with twin turbos would be the most likely candidate. It is already available in the latest Land Cruiser. The V6 diesel engine, codenamed “F33A” and producing 304 horsepower (227 Kilowatts) as well as 516 pound-feet (706 Newton-meters), is channeled to both axles via a ten speed automatic transmission that’s also found in the gas Land Cruiser.2022 Toyota Tundra teaser Although we wouldn’t be too excited, it is strange that Toyota released the video the very same week it showed the 2022 Tundra. It’s not a huge coincidence, considering the truck has been shown extensively in recent weeks.

Although it’s not clear when the Ford F-150 competitor will be revealed, the latest teaser showed a smartphone that displayed the 9:19 time. It could have been a hint at a September 19 reveal.
