Travis Pastrana Shows He’s Not a Brat by Jumping One on a Frozen Lake

Subaru Brat.

Travis Pastrana is very active. You can see his activities in this video. The Subaru Brat jump at end is the highlight, but he also participates in a nighttime speed, distance (TSD), testing tires on a frozen lake and setting up an engine for his Subaru WRX rally vehicle.

Pastrana participates in the Buffum Night Rally TSD. These events require drivers and co-drivers to complete each section of a course within a given time frame at a specific average speed. This one is even more difficult because it takes place on rural roads. Participants don’t have access to a map and there is no coverage by cell phones.

Pastrana jokes about how he and his codriver will get lost and end up in last place. They finish in the top ten.

Pastrana then goes to a frozen lake in order to test the snow tires for his Nitro RX rallycross Subaru. Pastrana is initially nervous about the possibility of his tires sliding through the ice.

Pastrana originally planned to do the Brat stunt by doing the jump, then a 360 and driving forward. The Subaru’s small size and thin tires don’t provide much power, but they do have good traction on ice. Pastrana eventually manages to do a spin, but it doesn’t look like he is happy with the outcome. Instead, the focus shifts to doing the jump.

Pastrana still has a lot of racing work to complete before that happens. Pastrana runs a 3-mile course on his Subaru stage rally Subaru to ensure that the engine is still in good condition.

It’s time to do the Brat jump after a lot of preparation. Except for a roll hoop that covers the cab, the car is as it was before. The 1984 model would have a 1.8-liter four-cylinder that produces just 73 horsepower (54 megawatts). Pastrana barely manages to make it to the landing platform with such little power.

Subaru Brat was the brand’s entry in the compact truck market. Subie used a pair of back seats to make it a pickup. This avoids the 25 percent “Chicken Tax” that is imposed on imported trucks. You could choose from all-wheel drive. Depending on the year of the vehicle, it was powered by either a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter boxer four-cylinder or 1.8-liter naturally-aspirated boxer four-cylinder.
