Two Shelby GT500 Modifieds Race in 2,000-HP Drag Race

Every Mustang is equipped with 1,000 horsepower, and there are drivers who can use it.

Everyone at Motor1.com enjoys drag racing. Over the years we have seen many quarter-mile and even half-mile drag racing races. We will soon share some of our exciting races. This video is different from others because it doesn’t feature a bunch of cars competing for bragging right. The Mustang wins this time. Which one is it?

This is a valid question, as these 2020 Shelby GT500s are more alike than they are different. Both cars are not stock. Each car has been modified under the hood to produce no less than 1,000 horsepower. Both GT500s also have drag slicks to get that power to the ground. The smaller 18-inch wheels on the back of the silver Shelby are not equal. The seats on the green GT500 have been removed to reduce weight. The ingredients indicate that this should be an extremely close race.

But, the quarter-mile stats of solo passes pre-race suggest otherwise. The green GT500 ran down the strip in 9.9 seconds at 148 mph with a time of 1.7 seconds leaving the tree. The 60-foot time is a little weak for drag racers who are familiar with timeslip data. This suggests that the Shelby is not getting the best launch. The solo timeslip for silver ‘Stang reveals this. It ran the quarter in 9.5 seconds at slightly slower trap speeds, but a stronger 1.5-second 60 foot time. Even a 0.4 second difference is enough to win at these speeds.

This brings us to the side by side race. Two Shelby GT500s with 1,000 horsepower each are on the track. This is where it gets really exciting. Both cars had traction problems this time, with both posting identical 1.8 second 60-foot times. Both drivers had nearly the same reaction times. At the other end, both cars completed a 9.9 second run. This race was only hundredths second different, making it a photo finish. However, one car won the race.
