UPDATE: The 2021 Kia Seltos is another affordable option in the SUV-Heavy Lineup

The base model will be priced at “below $22,000.”

Two days ago, Kia teased the launch of a new SUV at the 2019 LA Auto Show. Yesterday, the identity of this model was revealed by an unexpected leak that took place in the form a huge advertisement outside the Los Angeles Convention Center. Officially, the Seltos makes its debut in America with two gasoline engines.

The model is similar to the international   version that was launched in India a few months back. However, the U.S.-spec Seltos has minor modifications to its front fascia including a prominent bumper diffuser, and the obligatory amber side markers. We were unable, in fact, to see any differences between the SUV versions at the back.

Kia claims the low-cost high-riding machine offers “a tremendous amount roominess and comfort” due to its rear reclining feature. The automaker does not provide exact dimensions of the boot volume, but claims that the Seltos is a “leader in its class” when it comes space and versatility.

Two gasoline engines provide power. The base unit is a 2.0-liter MPI with 146-hp (109-kW), while the S, S, and EX versions have an Intelligent Variable Transmission. The 1.6-liter turbo, which produces 175-hp (130 kW) and 1.6-liter MPIs, has a seven-speed dual clutch automatic for the SX and SX models. An optional all-wheel drive is available depending on the trim level. It has a center locking differential which splits the power equally between the front or rear wheels.

Tech-wise, the 10.25-inch touch-sensitive screen on the center console features a satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity as well as a Bose premium audio system with eight speakers. There are many safety and assist systems, such as lane departure warning, smartcruising control with stop-and-go function, forward collision assistance, and more.

The model will be offered in five trim levels when it goes on sale. These range from the entry-level LX to the top-of the line SX. The entry-level LX model with all-wheel drive will start at $22,000. More information about pricing is expected to be available closer to the SUV’s launch date.
